I've just bought a Mk2 to and just can't get the aperture the hold, any clues as to why or how to gain manual control of the aperture?

Turn the dial on top to "M" mode. That gives you manual aperture.
Thanks, actually It seemed to be the fact I needed to set the camera to Movie Display.
